Introduction
A water maker is its own closed system: pump → filters → membrane → UV. This chapter builds the architecture — how seawater becomes fresh water, the role of each stage, and the difference between the Dometic DW Series and SpotZero families. The membrane is the heart, and everything else in the system exists to protect it.
Why it matters: a water maker is not a descaling problem. The membrane does not scale the way a water heater does — its failure mode is fouling, puncture, or end-of-life. Service the components; do not descale the system.
The reverse osmosis process
A water maker turns seawater into fresh water by forcing it through a semi-permeable membrane under high pressure. Four stages in sequence:
- High-pressure pump — draws seawater and pushes it through the pre-filter chain.
- Pre-filters — remove particulates, sediments, and chloramines that would damage the membrane.
- RO membrane — the actual separation. Water molecules pass; salt and minerals do not.
- UV sterilizer — kills any remaining microorganisms before the fresh water goes to the tank.
The membrane is the most expensive component to replace. Every other component exists to protect it.
Dometic DW Series vs SpotZero
- Dometic DW Series — a compact, integrated unit. Pump, filters, membrane, and control panel in
one housing. A failure is often a single-unit swap.
- SpotZero family — a modular platform. The high-pressure pump, the BPR assembly, the recycle
flow controller, and the membrane array are separate components that can be serviced independently.
Knowing which platform you are on determines your parts, your service procedure, and your repair cost.
Service vs descaling
A water maker is not a descaling problem. The correct maintenance path is to replace the pre-filters on schedule, flush the system with fresh water after each use, and replace the membrane when the output drops. "Descaling" a water maker is a misdiagnosis — it is a residential water heater fix applied to a system that does not have that failure mode.
Remember this line: the membrane is the heart and the most expensive component. Service the
components that protect it; do not descale the system.
